What else makes PhoneBox different?

Who should use PhoneBox?

How much does PhoneBox cost?

PhoneBox offers both prepaid and postpaid (monthly) plans.

If you’re visiting Canada for a short stay, choose a prepaid plan. Your SIM card will automatically expire after 30 days unless you decide to renew, giving you complete flexibility with no ongoing commitment.

If you’re moving to Canada as a newcomer, such as on an IEC work permit, a monthly plan may be the better option. Monthly plans are billed on the 2nd of each month and offer an affordable way to stay connected long-term.

With competitive pricing and excellent value, PhoneBox offers some of the cheapest SIM card plans in Canada.

Plans may change without notice.

FAQ – PhoneBox Canada SIM Card

Why choose PhoneBox instead of travel eSIM providers (Airalo, Holafly, etc.)

Travel eSIM providers are a popular option for short trips because they can be activated instantly without waiting for a physical SIM card. However, there are limitations:

❌ Not all phones support eSIM (many older or budget devices require a physical SIM)

❌ Most travel eSIMs provide data only, meaning you won’t get a real Canadian phone number for calls, banking, or job applications.

❌ Travel eSIMs are often more expensive and offer limited plan options.

Because of this, travel eSIMs are best suited for temporary travel rather than settling in Canada long-term.

Can I order the SIM card before arriving in Canada?

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of PhoneBox is that you can order your SIM card before you arrive in Canada.

You can:

  • Order online from your home country
  • Choose a future activation date
  • Receive free international shipping (physical SIM)
  • Or activate instantly with eSIM

This means your phone is ready to use as soon as you land in Canada.

To receive the SIM card in time, it must be ordered at least 30 days before travelling to Canada.

For orders within Canada (to a Canadian address) delivery takes about 14 days.

Do I need a Canadian credit card or address?

No. PhoneBox is designed for newcomers, so:

  • No Canadian credit card is required
  • No Canadian address is required
  • International credit cards are accepted

This makes it much easier than traditional Canadian carriers.

Does PhoneBox offer eSIM?

PhoneBox offers both options:

Physical SIM

  • Shipped internationally for free
  • Must be ordered at least 30 days before travel

eSIM

  • Instant digital delivery
  • No waiting for shipping
  • Ideal for last-minute departures

I'm leaving for Canada soon; how can I get my SIM card?

You can order a PhoneBox eSIM at any time, as the entire process is completed online. Just make sure your phone supports eSIM.

Please note that PhoneBox SIM cards are not available in retail stores across Canada.

If you’re short on time and can’t wait for a SIM card to be shipped, you can also pick one up at the PhoneBox offices in Downtown Vancouver or Downtown Toronto. A SIM card normally costs $10, but if you mention “Working Holiday Blog”, the $10 SIM card fee will be waived.

Does the PhoneBox SIM card work everywhere in Canada?

In all major cities such as Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, coverage is generally excellent. Coverage becomes more limited in remote northern and wilderness regions, regardless of carrier.

Which network does PhoneBox use?

PhoneBox uses the Telus network in Canada, one of the three major mobile providers in Canada, alongside Bell and Rogers.

This means your SIM card will work anywhere in Canada where Telus has coverage, offering broad and reliable service in most urban and populated areas.

However, it’s important to note that Canada’s vast geography leads to limited coverage in remote and rural regions. In places like the Yukon or other northern areas, you’ll generally find cell reception only near towns or communities. If an area lacks a nearby cell tower, there will be no mobile service, this affects all Canadian SIM providers, not just PhoneBox.

Does the PhoneBox SIM card work in the US?

Unfortunately, no, the SIM card can only be used within Canada. But PhoneBox also has a >> USA SIM card that you can use if you want to travel to the USA.

Can I call home from Canada? For example my family?

PhoneBox includes 1,000 free international calling minutes per month to selected countries, including Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. This makes it easy to stay in touch with family and friends back home while living in Canada.

If the country you want to call is not included in PhoneBox’s international calling destinations, you can use apps like WhatsApp or Messenger to make free voice and video calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data.

To call a landline or mobile number outside Canada, you can use a VoIP or Wi-Fi calling app. These calls are made over the internet and use the data included with your PhoneBox plan.

How do I extend the PhoneBox SIM card?

Once your SIM card has been activated, download the PhoneBox app and register using your PhoneBox phone number and email address. Please note that your PhoneBox phone number will be sent to you by email on your activation date.

Through the app, you can easily manage your account and renew your phone plan.

Important for Prepaid:

If you wish to keep your number and service active, make sure to renew your plan before the renewal date. If you do not renew in time, your SIM card will expire on the scheduled end date, and you will need to order a new SIM card to reactivate service.

How do I cancel the PhoneBox SIM card?

Prepaid Plans

There is no need to formally cancel a prepaid plan. Simply stop renewing your service, and your plan will automatically expire at the end of the current billing period. Once expired, the SIM card will become inactive.

If you have enabled Auto Renewal, make sure to disable it in your account settings before your next renewal date. Otherwise, your credit card will be charged automatically for the following month.

Postpaid (Monthly) Plans

Postpaid plans do not expire automatically and must be cancelled manually. You can cancel your service through your online account or in the PhoneBox app by selecting “Cancel My Service”.
