Who is behind working-holiday-canada.com?

I am Ute (Mel), from Germany, and I have been active in the (Work and Travel) Working Holiday Canada community for over 10 years.

Some of you may already know me from the Facebook IEC support groups, where I’ve been actively volunteering for several years.

I’m passionate about sharing my knowledge of the International Experience Canada (IEC) process and helping future Working Holiday participants navigate their way to making their Canadian adventure dream a reality.

So, who am I?

I once was one of you...

Back in 2010, I embarked on a Working Holiday year in Canada. I instantly fell in love with the country’s breathtaking landscapes, the laid-back, friendly culture, and the refreshing vibe of Canadian life. Even though a few years have passed and I’ve grown older, I’m still very much in “work and travel” mode, always ready to explore new places and collect new experiences whenever the opportunity arises.

One of the biggest perks of living near the majestic Rocky Mountains is having world-class scenery practically in my backyard. The rugged peaks, turquoise lakes, and wildlife never cease to amaze me. Whether it’s a spontaneous weekend getaway or a well-planned road trip, I get out there as often as I can.

So far, I’ve done countless short trips to Banff and Jasper. I’ve also ventured further: to the vibrant city of Vancouver, the charming coastal towns of Nova Scotia, the untouched wilderness of the Yukon, and even across the border into the expansive beauty of Alaska.

If you’re planning to come to Canada, I can say with confidence: you’re in for something truly special. There’s a magic here that stays with you long after you’ve left. I hope you fall in love with it, just like I did.

Canada is now my home

By 2011, I knew I didn’t want to leave Canada behind, so I made one of the biggest decisions of my life: I immigrated with my husband and made Canada our permanent home.

We chose to settle in Calgary, our favorite city and a perfect blend of urban energy and natural beauty. Nestled near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Calgary offers not only stunning views but also a gateway to some of Canada’s most iconic national parks.

For new Work and Travellers, this is a fantastic starting point, with plenty of seasonal and service-related job opportunities in the surrounding mountain towns like Canmore, Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper.

How this Info Blog was born

Since moving to Canada, I’ve mainly worked in customer service in the tourism industry, meeting travellers from all over the world and helping them make the most of their time in Canada.

But one thing I’ve always been especially passionate about is the Work and Travel Canada community. What started as a personal interest gradually turned into something much bigger.

Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about the International Experience Canada (IEC) program — from the application process and rules to the many questions and little headaches that come with it. I also spend countless hours volunteering in IEC Facebook groups, answering questions, sharing resources, and helping future participants figure things out.

Along the way, I noticed a pattern: the same questions kept popping up, and genuinely helpful answers were getting lost somewhere between hundreds of comments, old posts, and conflicting advice.

Facebook groups are great for connecting with people, but they’re not exactly the easiest place to find a specific answer when you need one.

That’s when I had the idea to create this blog: one place where you can find useful, reliable information about the Working Holiday experience in Canada, without having to spend hours digging through Facebook threads or asking Google the same question five different ways.

In 2022, I launched www.working-holiday-canada.com. A website designed specifically for future Working Holiday applicants who are eager to start their Canadian adventure but don’t know where to begin.

The blog brings together all the key information in one easy-to-navigate place, including:

  • a guide to apply for the Working Holiday with many hints and important information
  • the most frequently asked questions about the Working Holiday Canada application process
  • questions about what is the best health insurance for the Working Holiday, bank account, Canadian SIM card, etc.

Moving to another country sounds exciting until you meet the paperwork, visa rules, and approximately a thousand things you didn’t know you needed to figure out. That’s where this blog comes in. I’ll help you sort through the confusing stuff so you can focus on the good bits — like actually getting to Canada.

I would also like to stress out, what I am not!

  • I am not asking for any fees.
  • I am not offering any immigration services.
  • I am not an agency.
  • I am not an immigration consultant or lawyer.
  • I am not working for the Canadian government.
  • I am not able to help you personally with the application process.

All the information on www.working-holiday-canada.com is provided completely free of charge to support you on your journey to Canada. If you take the time to read through the Frequently Asked Questions and follow the 8-step application guide, I’m confident that you’ll be able to complete the process successfully on your own.

See here, why I think it’s not necessary to spend a lot of money for an agency.

The Working Holiday application can look like a lot at first, but don’t worry — it’s easier when you know what you’re doing. I’m here to help you figure out the process, avoid common pitfalls, and get one step closer to your Canadian adventure.

So see you around 👋
